Power Factor Correction Capacitors

Power Factor Correction Capacitors allow commercial and industrial facilities to avoid costly power factor penalities from the utility. Power Factor is the measure of actual kilowatts (kW) used in comparison to actual kilo-volt-amps (KVA) delivered. With purely resistive loads the kW and KVA are the same resulting in a power factor of 1.0. However, in today's facilities with numerous inductive loads this is no longer the case. Inductive loads, such as motors, have losses associated with the power required to sustain the magnetic field in the windings. These losses are not reflected in the kW metered but do increase the total KVA delivered to the facility. Almost all power utility companies are charging power factor penalties to compensate for this inefficiency in power usage.
